GOOD PICTURE BAD SOUND

Review by Dave Berardy, 2010-08-18

DON'T BE FOOLED BY THE DTS SURROUND ADVERTISEMENT . IT'S DTS 1.0 . DTS IS SUPPOSED TO BE 5.1 . CHRISTMAS VACATION IS 2.0 . ARE THESE GUYS SO CHEAP THEY CAN'T AFFORD 5.1 ? THE WHOLE PURPOSE OF BUYING BLU-RAY IS SUPERIOR SOUND AND PICTURE .

Better than the DVD

Review by TJSTOGY, 2010-08-15

I have a 1080p 40" Samsung TV... I've watched the movie probably hundreds of times and this is comparing it to the DVD I have, in it's 4:3 format. I am not sure if it was released in a widescreen format and if so, mine is the original DVD.

The video quality is not reference quality or jaw dropping (try a newer movie for that... this was the early 80's) but it looks much better than the DVD. Colors are more vibrant, details are stronger and much more apparent. For the first time I felt like I was almost there in the Vacation movie, rather than watching it. They could have gone the extra yard and created some sort of stereo soundtrack, but even the mono soundtrack sounds a lot better. Silly things like the scene when Rus is talking to his cousin and saying "So, what do you do for fun around here Dale?... I've got a stack'a nudie books this high!" I had no idea that Audrey was on the seesaw on the right of the screen... and the see saw was loud and clear in the audio mix as well. Never even noticed it was going on.

Lots of little things here. The beginning of the movie has Ellen scraping food off of plates, handing them to Clark and instead of putting them in the sink or dishwasher he's putting them right in the cabinet! I don't know if that's so much more apparent or if I was just looking for differences.

And, the topless scene with Beverly D'Angelo might be worth the price of admission alone for the bluray! I recommend it for everyone owning a blu ray player, any fan of the movie should own it, even if you do wait for the price to drop, get it.

5 star content....pathetic blu ray

Review by Richardson, 2010-08-11

The picture may be only a bit better than the previous DVD releases...the sound is ridiculous and the 43 second intro from 2003...weak. I do agree that the cover art also sucks but I certainly don't care if the disc delivers the goods...this doesn't. Don't bother to upgrade from your normal DVD..its not!

High Definition 1.0 ! sound

Review by P. Graham, 2010-08-11

Be advised before purchasing that the soundtrack of this is mono and, like the so-called high-definition picture, does not offer any distinguishable improvement over the (now quite) old DVD version.

There is some poetic justice in that it takes no longer than the infamous bait-and-switch car scene with Eugene Levy before the unfortunate owner of this disc realizes that he or she has also been taken for a ride by Warner.

Save your money.

Holiday Road

Review by Eric Mayforth, 2010-08-07

When Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) and his family head from Chicago to California on a highly anticipated family vacation, it doesn't quite work out as planned--hilarity ensues as the Griswolds run into car trouble, issues with extended family, a cantankerous pet, and even an untimely death. "Vacation" is full of laugh-out-loud moments, and has a higher-than-average number of memorable lines that really stick in your mind even years later. It is one of the best comedies of the 1980s.
